Interview and Giveaway with Jacqueline Gardner

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?

I've always been a storyteller.  As a kid, making up stories was part of my night time routine.  But as I progressed through school and finally went off to college I put writing on the back burner.  It wasn't until a couple years ago that I started writing again and remembered how much I love it.  Writing YA came natural for me.  I love writing 'firsts' - first kiss, first love, first loss, first betrayal.  In my opinion, 'firsts' are more fun to read about.

Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?

Mutiny is told from two perspectives - Eric & Mariella.  Eric is a government trained M.E.R. soldier, and Mariella is a serial rule-breaker.  Mariella was more challenging to write than Eric.  She's very opinionated and in my early drafts she came across as annoyingly snotty at first.  When we meet her, Mariella is going through a lot emotionally so it was very difficult to portray her in a likeable way right off the bat.  I didn't want readers to immediately hate her and then slowly start to find out why she acts the way that she does.

What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?

There's a scene in Mutiny where Eric is found guilty of betraying his Chief Commander.  The punishment for that betrayal is being chained and tossed in the ocean.  Thoroughly chained and angry, Eric sinks to the bottom and briefly experiences what it feels like to drown.  I wouldn't say this is my favorite scene in the book, but it's one in which I got a little emotional while writing.  To accurately show what was going on in his head, I had to reflect back on a personal near drowning experience I once had as a teenager.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?

Yeah I totally do!  What gets me out of it though usually changes every time I find myself in a bind.  I'll start with bribery - a finished chapter for a cupcake or new addition to my closet.  When that doesn't work, I take some time off and try to get outside more.  The mountains and being outdoors is usually what initially inspires me to start a story.

Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?

I always have to have music playing and my idea journal next to me.  I do a lot of doodling.

Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?

I'm an amateur cake decorator and sometimes I post my cake creations on my website.  I also live in the Rockies so I love camping, hiking, and visiting historic mining towns.  And in college, I was an Exercise Phys major so I'm really into fitness and clean eating (cupcakes excluded).

What was the last amazing book you read?

I'm a hardcore Harry Potter fan and I can't wait for the new JK Rowling book!

Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?

This might sound weird but I like reading in public for some reason.

What can readers expect next from you?

I have another young adult novel out called Thoughtless.  It's about a teenage mind-reader who discovers a dead cheerleader in the janitor's closet, along with the knowledge that she is the killer's next target.  I'm currently working on the sequel to that novel and I hope to have it out at the end of this summer.

Mutiny
M.E.R. series, #1

Book Blurb:

Eric's life aboard a top secret stealth submarine as a member of the government’s M.E.R. program has been about discipline, cunning and survival.

As both a soldier and a natural born regenerator, he can heal from any wound, but to stay alive he must accept a vein-burning serum that prevents his DNA from over-mutating. In exchange Eric must follow his Chief Commander’s every order. And never ask questions, no matter the assignment.

When he goes ashore on his first solo mission he runs into a complication he didn't expect; Mariella, the target’s daughter. She’s about to change everything.
